While pilot watches were generally available, a niche category of pilot watches comprised of pilot watches with tilted dials. The Vacheron Constantin American 1921 is one of the first to come to mind. According to the legend, it was commissioned by an American collector who was a pilot and driver aficionado. The idea behind the tilted dials was to allow the wearer to easily read the time while the hands were on the wheel. It was a practical need that drove this design, no pun intended.
